4th February 2024

Welcome everyone to our services today! If you are a visitor or worshipping with us for the first time, we hope you will feel the warmth of our welcome and return soon.

This morning we are pleased to welcome our good friend, Haydn Blackey, Haydn first visited us as a ‘guest’ preacher in 2011.  We are delighted that he still accepts our invitations.  We look forward to an inspiring service as Haydn leads us.

Fair-trade tea and coffee will be served after this morning’s service, we invite you to enjoy time in the company of friends and browse the selection of hand-made cards that are available.

Church Family and Pastoral News

We include this in the newsletter to inform our prayers during the week.

  • Sue Skym has received the results of her MRI scan and is now waiting for an appointment with a cardiologist. We hope the wait won’t be too long.
  • Elsie has an appointment with her consultant on Friday when she will find out the plan for her future treatment at Velindre.
  • As Brian has been struggling with fatigue the decision has been made to stop the current medication. He will see the consultant next week to see to discuss the situation.
  • Following his appointment last week Dave will have a scan, hopefully this week, when more will be decided on future treatment. We think of Kath as they wait for the results.
  • Dorothy has an appointment with the consultant. She has to wait for an infection to clear up, so is self-isolating while waiting for her operation and not venturing out.
  • We have missed Marlene McCloy from Worship and Guild as has been suffering with sciatica, hopefully the appointment she has this week with the Physiotherapist will help.

St David’s Guild

We certainly learned what Bethan does in her role as Artistic Director at Urdd Gobaith Cymru. Her enthusiasm shone through. We now know how big the organisation is. There are over 56,000 members aged between 8 and 25. They provide opportunities for children and young people across Wales to take part in a range of experiences through the medium of Welsh.

They are looking for sponsors to be the first to contribute to Fund for All – Urdd Summer Camps to secure places at one of our camps for children who would otherwise not have the opportunity to go on a summer holiday.  A contribution of £180 would cover all activities and full board for a super summer holiday at one of the Urdd centres.  We donated our regular weekly subs, plus a substantial amount to the fund.

This week we will meet at Alfreds for our belated Christmas Meal. Our tables are booked for one o’clock:

It is suggested that we arrive from 12.45. Don’t forget your pen so you can take part in Marilyn’s Quiz!

 Event at the Chaplaincy

‘The University Chaplaincy warmly invites you to the second session in its series ‘Gender, Sexuality and Faith’ on Thursday 8th February at the Meeting House at 1.00 pm. People of different faiths will be talking about their community’s approach to LGBTQ+ issues and how it is engaging with them, followed by question time. If you intend to come, please contact Ray.

Birthdays

There are three people that we know of who have the birthdays this week.

Sue Salmon is, hopefully, celebrating TODAY (Sunday 4th), Cyril Davies will be 96 on Monday 5th and Lorraine Rees will no doubt celebrate with her family on Saturday 10th. Enjoy yourselves as you are able!

Thanks …..

…from Dorothy, ‘Thank you for the phone calls and friendship, I’m looking forward to getting back to normal once I’ve had my operation. I am missing going to Church and Guild meetings and seeing you all’

Move to Castle Square – further update

The project was sent out on January 25th to three construction firms.  Tenders are due to be returned to the architect by Friday 16th February.

Lent Studies

This year we will be holding our Lent studies at the church on alternate Thursday evenings and afternoons. We will be using the ‘Act on Poverty’ resources prepared by Christian Aid which are available online https://www.christianaid.org.uk/get-involved/campaigns/act-poverty-resource-packs If you would like a printed version, please add your name to the list at the back of the church.

The first session will take place on Thursday 15th February at 6:30pm and will be led by Ray. The theme for this session will be ‘Prophetic’. Meetings will be informal and tea and coffee and maybe a biscuit or two will also be available.’  More information next week.

Thought for the week

Time is the coin of your life.

You spend it.

Do not allow others to spend it for you.
