3rd March 2024

We welcome all who join us for worship today, as we gather for the third Sunday in lent.  If you are a visitor or worshipping with us for the first time; we pray that you will experience peace and fellowship.

Our service today is being led by our good friend Dave Kitchen from Cardiff.  Dave is no stranger to us and the earliest record we have of him leading worship is back in 2004 on February 29th.

We look forward to what Dave has to share with us – Today’s theme is Cousins: together and apart.

All are invited to join us for tea or coffee, which will be served in the hall following the service when Handmade Cards will also be available, including Easter cards. Cards can be personalised.

Church Family and Pastoral News

We include this in the newsletter to inform our prayers during the week.

  • Both John and Jean Davies were admitted to hospital last weekend with Flu, Jean was discharged on Wednesday, and John came home on Friday.
  • Dorothy is “getting stronger everyday “. She is behaving herself but is counting the days when she can do more. Take it easy Dorothy!
  • Graham Hill had one night in hospital, but is now back home. Life is a challenge for him and Anne.
  • There are a number of people struggling with arthritis. We think of them as they endure the pain.
  • Renda has been in hospital for day surgery but back home and resting.
  • Brian has his stent removed on Friday, and is hoping that this will relieve his back pain.
  • We think of those who are unable to leave their homes unaided because of poor health, and we give thanks for those who care for them.

Birthdays & Anniversaries

There are three Birthdays that we are aware of this week: Stephen Webber is celebrating a ‘big’ birthday today (3rd), and Friday 8th Gwyneth James and Marilyn Leach will be celebrating.  Also Alan and Stephanie celebrate their 65 Wedding Anniversary on 7th March, known in the UK as Blue Sapphire. Congratulations to you both.

St David’s Guild

What a wonderful afternoon of music was enjoyed by guild members last Wednesday afternoon.  Eira gave us an outstanding ‘recital’. She entertained us both on trumpet and cornet with an eclectic mix of music ranging from the classical, ceremonial and religious to film, modern and jazz. She played pieces arranged by Christopher Norton such as ‘Nobody Knows, Barbara Allen, The Drunken Sailor. Other pieces were ‘Didn’t my Lord deliver Daniel?’ and the third movement from Neruda – Concerto in E flat major. She filled the Sanctuary with exquisite sounds …both delicate and energising. We all hope that she will come again in the near future.

This week, a member of guild, Dilys Davies, will tell us about both the forgotten story of the intrigue behind the Eisteddfod held in 1893 in Pontypridd and the preparations going forward to this year’s Eisteddfod in Pontypridd. A long- standing friend of guild, Caryl Williams, will also entertain us in song with Welsh airs.

Lent Studies

We continue our Lent studies at the church using the ‘Act on Poverty’ resources prepared by Christian Aid which are available online https://www.christianaid.org.uk/get-involved/campaigns/act-poverty-resource-packs

Catherine will lead the fourth session at 2.00pm in the Victoria Room. The theme this week is ‘Located’. Printed copies are available on request.

Flowers in church

In our quest to be an eco-church we no longer display flowers on a weekly basis, although we do still deliver flowers (or Chocolates) to people who need cheering up! Donations towards these are accepted by Marilyn   Edwards. However, if anyone wishes to have a floral display for a special occasion or anniversary, they are welcome to purchase the flowers and use the vases that are available.

News from the Elder’s Meeting

Three tenders for the work on the Castle Square building have been received. There will be a short church meeting after the service on March 17th to vote on acceptance of the tender recommended by the architects and Chris Atherton.

Arrangements for Holy Week and Easter were agreed, details to follow.

Thought for the week

May you live with the expectation that what you might do tomorrow

could be better than anything you have done so far.
