2nd February 2025

Welcome everyone to our services today, either in person or online! If you are a visitor or worshipping with us for the first time, we hope you will feel the warmth of our welcome and return soon.

Today’s ’guest’ preacher is a former Moderator of URC Wales Synod – Rev Peter Noble. Peter is no stranger to us and we are looking forward to what he will share with us!

Fair-trade tea and coffee will be served after this service, we invite you to enjoy some light refreshments in the company of friends, when you will be able to peruse the selection of handmade cards that are available.

Church Family and Pastoral News

We include this in the newsletter to inform our prayers during the week:

  • We are very sorry to say that Jean Davies is still in hospital; We think of her and John who says that it is very quiet without her, but he is being well looked after.
  • We have heard the sad news that Mavis Ashford, who was a much-valued former member and Elder of our Church, until she moved to Cowbridge in 2010, passed away recently. Her Funeral will be held at Coychurch Crematorium at 11.30 on Wednesday 5th
  • We hope that all will go well for those who have hospital appointments this week.
  • We give thanks for ‘good’ news and we remember those for whom news has not been so good.

Birthdays

There are two people who will be celebrating their birthdays this week;

Sue Salmon will be celebrating on Tuesday 4th, and Cyril Davies will be 97 on Wednesday 5th

We hope you both have an enjoyable day.

Christmas Appeal ~ Thanks….

…. from Crwban

We can’t thank you enough for the donation,

it will go towards an outing for all service users which they are deciding on together.

An Important Date for your Diary

Future Ministry ~ Clare a mature student in her final year who will graduate this summer and has met the pastorate call group twice, has accepted the invitation to ‘preach with a view’. She will therefore be visiting the pastorate for the weekend of 22-23 March. Details of the weekend are yet to be finalised, but Clare will lead worship in the pastorate on the Sunday morning. Please keep the whole weekend free so that you can meet Clare informally and attend worship under her leading.

Diary for the Week

The Park Ramblers will meet to walk at 10.15 followed by Coffee at The Princes

Wednesday 5th           St David’s Guild will meet at 12.45 in The Blueberry for their post-Christmas Meal

St David’ Guild

Last week’s speaker, Dr Oliver Davis, senior archaeologist at Cardiff University, held us enthralled with his illustrated talk of the Caer and Ely Rediscovery (CAER) Heritage Project. The project was started in 2011 and is a collaboration between ACE, Cardiff University, local schools, residents, community groups and many others. The project is focused on working with local people to discover more about their heritage. Incredibly the following sites have been discovered- an Iron Age hillfort, a Neolithic causeway enclosure, a medieval church, a ringwork castle, a Roman villa and the remains of Cardiff’s Ely racecourse at Trelai Park. The project has recently opened the new Heritage Centre at Caerau which will be a hub for community learning and heritage-based learning. The project is on-going and in 2017 was awarded the Times Higher Education Award.

It was a thoroughly entertaining and educational afternoon.

This week Guild will be meeting at the Blueberry Hotel for their Annual dinner which is booked for 1pm.

GDPR Forms ~

Another reminder!

Please complete the forms on line  – https://forms.gle/geVz83Yt9A3W4BrM6  or return paper forms by 16th February.

Until we receive the forms we cannot issue a new Directory. Why do we need these forms completed? The forms that were completed in 2018 did not include permission to use your birth dates or email – it was already our practice, so we assumed consent. You can consent to all, some or none of the purposes.

Forms are available from Marcia. We cannot issue an up-to-date directory until all forms are returned.

Eco Church

Anyone interested in reducing our carbon footprint in our new home might like to attend the Eco Church Road Show at City URC Church Cardiff on Saturday February 8th, 10am to 3.30pm. Further details and a sign – up sheet are on the table at the back of the church.

Flowers in church

It’s eleven months since we took the decision NOT to display flowers in church. ~ This was in the newsletter

In our quest to be an eco-church we no longer display flowers on a weekly basis, although we do still deliver flowers (or Chocolates) to people who need cheering up! Donations towards these are accepted by Marilyn   Edwards. However, if anyone wishes to have a floral display for a special occasion or anniversary, they are welcome to purchase the flowers and use the vases that are available.
