24h Aug 2025

We welcome you all to our services today, especially if you are a visitor or worshipping with us for the first time. We hope that you will leave the service feeling refreshed in mind and spirit.

Rev Ray Vincent is leading our service today which will include the celebration of the Lord’s Supper: all who so wish are welcome to partake of the bread and wine.

Coffee will NOT be available today, but handmade cards will be available in the hall.

Pastoral Matters

We only include names when permission has been given.

  • We are sad to report that Gill Miller, a former member of Castle Square URC, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday. We keep her family and those who will miss her in our prayers. Funeral details will follow.
  • We think of those who have to live with conditions that they cannot have surgery for, and pray that they have the medical support that they need.
  • We pray for Clare as she prepares for her Ordination and Induction on Saturday, and as she gets to know the people and communities that she will be working with, may we mindful of what that will entail.
  • It was good to see Pat in church last week and we pray that she continues to slowly improve.

Thanks…

…from Anne. ‘Thankyou to my friends in St David’s Uniting for all the lovely cards, gifts and birthday messages I received on my 91st Birthday last Sunday. I very much appreciated receiving them.’

Sharing Other News

It is possible that some of our readers will remember Rev Dr Peter Cruchley.  The URC Synod Facebook page has reported that Peter who was receiving treatment for cancer sadly died on Friday 15thAugust.

Peter served URC churches in Cardiff for 24 years – at the Ely Pastorate 1992-2001 and Beulah URC 2001-2016 before taking a role with CWM and then moving on as Director of the World Council of Churches on World Mission and Evangelism. May he rest in peace and rise in glory. WCC Obituary link.

We’re delighted to celebrate Rev Dr John Morgans, former Moderator of the URC Wales Synod, was awarded Green Robes by Gorsedd Cymru at the National Eisteddfod of Wales in Wrexham on 8 August.
Honoured for his significant contributions to ecumenical life, social justice, and Welsh culture. When he was Moderator the family moved from their home in Cardiff to a council house on the Penrhys and later founded Llanfair Uniting Church.        See our full write-up and photos:

Ordination

As Clare prepares for her Ordination and all the changes it will mean for her, she still found time to view our service last week; Lynda received this message on Monday.

“I just managed to watch half of yesterday’s service by the Justice and Peace group and I thought what they did was important and powerful. Do say hello to everyone and I shall see you and them a week on Saturday (!).”

The pick-up points for the Ordination are, the bus layby by The Otley in Treforest at 12.30 and then onto Pontypridd Bus Station later.  We will leave Merthyr at 16.45, please allow time to get on the bus!

The gates for the Castle Court car park will be open from 12.15.

Church Directory – a reminder

We hope to print the updated directory soon!  We are aware that some people’s details have changed – PLEASE let us know as we cannot change any of the details you gave us on the GDPR forms without your permission.

Medical Aid for Palestinians

Last week £284 was received for Medical Aid. The appeal is open until 7th September, the day of the People’s Peace Walk ‘25 miles through Gaza’ – when people will be walking from Merthyr to Cardiff along the Taff Trail starting at 6am and aiming to arrive in Cardiff 8pm. You can join the walk anywhere along the trail. We hope to be able to give an approximate time that it will pass through Pontypridd soon.

Newsletter Update

The newsletter will continue in its current form until the end of September, when Alison will take over.

We are extremely grateful to Alison for volunteering to take on this role.

More news about this will be announced when it is available.
