1st December 2024

Welcome everyone!  If this is your first visit, we invite you to join us for tea or coffee in the hall following the service for a time of informal fellowship.

It is the first Sunday in Advent and our Annual Amnesty Service, which has been arranged by our Justice and Peace group

It is also World Aids Day.

During the service we will accept your gifts for the residents of the hostel in Mill Street and the children and young people supported by Home Start.

Cards for the young people at Oakhill, where Phil, our former Minister is Chaplain, will be given out before the service, for people to sign and bring forward with the Christmas Gifts.

Hand made cards will be available in the hall following the service; there is a great selection of Christmas cards!

Church Family and Pastoral News

We include this in the newsletter to inform our prayers during the week:

  • Stephanie was unable to have her steroid injection as she has bronchitis, we keep her in our thoughts as she waits for another appointment
  • Sue Ruck has finally got a moving in date for her new home – she is moving on Monday 2nd December. We wish her well in her new abode.
  • Carol’s sister Barbara, thankfully, was not affected by the floods this time, although it was a very worrying time for her and also for Carol in her concern for her.
  • We think of those in our fellowship who are unable to worship with us because of poor health or family responsibilities.
  • We also remember those who are finding the dark winter nights and the weather difficult to cope.

Birthdays

There is only one person on our list that has a birthday this week:  Marcia will be celebrating on Monday, 2nd, although the celebrations started last weekend!

Thanks….

…..from Sheila. I wish to express my thanks for the care and concern that has been shown to me over the recent weeks and also during the flooding last week although thankfully I wasn’t affected.  Thankyou!

As is our tradition we support with monetary donations an international charity and a local charity.

The decision of the church meeting was that we support

Ahla Fawda in Lebanon as our international charity and

Crwban in Treforest as our local charity.

Information about these charities is in our Christmas Appeals Flyer

The appeal will close on December 29th.

St David’s Guild

Unfortunately, the talk by the local police community officer did not take place and so members were asked to bring an object that was memorable to them. What a mixed bag we had…. from secateurs and a very practical battery-powered bottle opener to a musical box; a comical reading; superb photographs of three generations of family weddings and some chair aerobics taken from a book recommended by Phil. Who would have thought of using hymn books to do bicep curls!

This week we look forward to a visit by Steve Logan who some of you will know. He will be speaking on his charity work abroad.

Leprosy Mission

LeprosyA reminder that Leprosy Mission boxes & Annual donations should be given to Margaret Morris. If you choose to send a cheque, please make it payable to St David’s Uniting Church.

Used Postage stamps

St David’s has for many years saved stamps from letters. In 2020 Carol sent a large number of envelopes to Amnesty. Many have asked ‘Is it worthwhile sending the stamps?’ After sending the cards Carol received a letter with the following message from Caroline Reynolds of Amnesty International– ‘I do hope you continue to save the stamps for this great cause.’

Thought for the Week

Waiting is a period of learning.

The longer we wait, the more we hear about him for whom we are waiting.
