16th February 2025

We extend a warm welcome to everyone who joins us for worship today, either online or in person.

Our service today is being led by Maggie Kirkbride, Admin Officer and Lay Preaching Advocate for URC Wales Synod. We pray for us all a time of rich blessing, but also of challenge, as Maggie leads us.

Tea and coffee will be served in the hall following the service, and handmade cards will be on sale.

Church Family and Pastoral News

We include this in the newsletter to inform our prayers during the week:

  • We think of those we know who are in hospital, and hope that they may be able to return home soon.
  • Marilyn Y endured some dental treatment last week and is recovering well, but eating little!
  • People who are concerned about the health of close family.
  • Many people are suffering with seasonal colds which seem to be lasting too long.
  • We remember those of our fellowship who are unable to remember us, and we pray for their well-being,

Birthdays

There are two people that we know of who will be celebrating this week:    Catherine on Tuesday 18th and Simon Morris on Thursday 20th. We hope you have a good day!

St David’s Guild

Dr Christine Chapman gave a very interesting illustrated talk last Wednesday on Women’s Archive Wales (Archif Menywod Cymru) . The archive promotes the recognition of women in Welsh history and the preservation of sources of women’s history in Wales. Christine told us about women who have made their mark in Wales and further afield in politics, science, sport, entrepreneurial businesses and community work.

The society is pursuing the idea of erecting purple plaques to acknowledge their achievements and would welcome any volunteers.

This week Robert will be speaking on a subject close to his heart…photography. The title of his talk is ‘Pioneer Women Photographers’       We are looking forward very much to hearing about them.

Appeal for Volunteers

Following the verbal appeal last Sunday 2 people expressed interest in being Health and Safety Officer but, as yet, no volunteers for Hirings Officer. If you think you could do this, Margaret Morris can tell you what is involved.

Lent Studies

This year, we will once again be organising Lent groups. These will take place on alternate Thursday afternoons and evenings, starting on March 6th at 2pm in the church. We will be using the book, ‘Hope in Hard Places’ from the organisation Embrace the Middle East. If you would like a copy, then please add your name to the sheet at the back of the church by next Sunday 23rd February. Or you can buy it directly from https://shop.embraceme.org/products/lent-study-guide-2025-hope-in-hard-places It costs £4.99 + postage’

Working with DPIA Wales

We’re excited to be working with DPIA Wales to deliver some new workshops for refugees and asylum seekers. Please tell anyone you think might be interested.

On Tuesday 6th March 10.am – 12 Noon we are holding be two Information Sessions:

Health Literacy – Healthy Living in Wales    &    Cultural Orientation – Wales Culture and the Law

Volunteers are wanted to welcome participants and serve refreshments if required.

An Invitation from the Chaplaincy

On Wednesday 19th February at 12.00 in the Meeting House, Treforest Campus, Jarel Robinson-Brown will speak about “Christianity and Sex: Why the Church has a body problem” There will be an opportunity to ask questions and stay and chat as refreshments will be served.

Jarel is a British-born Jamaican and grew up in West London. He is Vicar of St. German’s Church, Cardiff.

His book Black, Gay, Christian, British, Queer: The Church and the Famine of Grace was published by SCM Press in 2021. In it he draws from his own experience to challenge Christians of all churches and races to take grace seriously as the unconditional love of God for everybody.

The event is free, but it will help if you reply to [email protected] to let us know  you intend to come.

Thought for the Week

Far away there in the sunshine are my highest aspirations.

I may not teach them but I can look up and see their beauty,

believe in them and try to follow them.

Louise May Alcott 1832-1888
