14th July 2024

We welcome everyone to our service today, whether you are joining us on Zoom, in person at St David’s, or later on YouTube – The theme for both services is ‘Traditions’

Our zoom service will be led by Gwen Simmonds and will start at 10:45am with pre-service chat from 10:30, so everyone, including those who cannot physically come to church for various reasons can see familiar faces and catch up on news.

Michael Howells will be joined by Father Jacob and the liturgy choir from St Theodore and St Teilo’s Orthodox Church in the Church, the service there will start at 10.45.

Tea and coffee, will be served in the hall following the service and Handmade cards will be available.

Church Family and Pastoral News

We include this in the newsletter to inform our prayers during the week.

  • Many will have already heard that Valerie Henson passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday 10th July just 3 days before her 83rd birthday.    We keep her husband, John, and children Gareth, Rhoda, Iestyn and their families, especially Liz, Isobel and Tomos in our prayers as they support John in the coming days.        As Iestyn posted on Facebook, Mam was a person of great faith and resolve, and she would want us now to celebrate her life just as we mourn the loss. Details of a public celebration will follow when known.
  • We continue to hold Sue Ruck in our prayers as she says a last farewell to her brother on Monday.
  • We keep Sue Skym in our thoughts in these early days following the funeral of Matthew last Friday.
  • We are sorry to say that Jean Davies is in Royal Glamorgan Hospital, we hope it won’t be for long.
  • Gwyneth, is now home and we look forward to when she is able to join us in church in person.
  • We think of those for who this time of year holds sad memories.

Birthdays & Anniversaries

There is just one birthday this week that we know of; Ron Howells will be celebrating on Monday 15th! We hope you enjoy ‘YOUR’ day Ron!

We also send our Congratulations and Best wishes to Jane & Hywel who are celebrating their Diamond Wedding 18th July. We trust that having already celebrated with a holiday they will be able to ‘party!’

Thanks….

….from Gwyneth, she said, ‘Please let everyone know how touched I have been by the kindness people have shown me. The lovely cards and phone calls, they have given me such a big lift. Good News! I am coming home today (Friday).

We will be gathering with friends old and new, distant and not so distant, to celebrate the life of St David’s Uniting Church in Pontypridd as we start to prepare for the next chapter in our journey when we move to Treforest. There will be lots of memories and undoubtedly sadness, but join us, online or in person, as we recollect and look forward together.

Visit to Caldey Island for a Retreat

Our friends at Penrhys have invited us to join them at a retreat on Caldey Island from Tuesday July, 23rd to Friday July 27th. The cost is a suggested donation, for those who can afford it, of £70 a night which includes full board and boat crossing. There is also the option of joining for just a day or two. The retreat will be led by Penrhys’ Nurture Group. If anyone is interested speak to Pam

~ More volunteers required!

We are doing our bit to welcome and support the Eisteddfod as it comes to Pontypridd.

OUR church will be used as a venue for competing choirs to rehearse. We will have an opportunity to listen to them as we have been asked to provide stewards at different times each day between 3rd – 10th August.

A sign-up sheet will be available on 21st July, further details from Maralyn Tomlinson or Lynda.

With regard to serving refreshments at St Catherines, we are still waiting for confirmation that we will be responsible for serving on Tuesday 6th August from 11.30-14.30.

Raising Funds for Velindre Cancer Centre – Update

Logo for 30 miles in 1 day charity showing a footprint with the words 30 miles 1 day on the soleForty people from Golley Slater, including Ianto and Bethan completed the 30 miles in a day challenge. Their target was to raise £15,000 They smashed their target! The latest figure is £18,237. Money raised for Velindre Charity helps fund ground breaking research and clinical trials and so much more which are above those provided by the NHS – so donations really do have a significant impact on patients and their families.
