10th March 2024

We welcome all who join us for worship today, whether online or in person. as we gather for the fourth Sunday in Lent and Mothering Sunday.

Today is the third Sunday in Lent and also our Monthly Zoom service which is being led by Rev Ray Vincent and his theme is What is Sin? What is Salvation?

We invite you to join us in ‘the square’ from 10.30 for a pre-service chat!

For those who don’t have internet access or prefer ‘live’ worship Michael is leading a service celebrating Mothering Sunday. We thank Michael for facilitating the in-house service.

Handmade Cards will be available in the hall following the service, with a good selection for Easter.

Church Family and Pastoral News

We include this in the newsletter to inform our prayers during the week.

  • We continue to hold Renda in our thoughts and prayers as she prepares for the birth of her baby.
  • Marcia has had an operation this weekend, and is looking forward to being pain free.
  • We remember those of our fellowship who are unable to remember us, and we pray for their well-being.
  • We give thanks for ‘good’ news and we remember those for whom news has not been so good.
  • There are several people who are unable to worship with us because of illness or family responsibilities. A phone call or visit would let them know they are not forgotten!

Birthdays & Anniversaries

Just three people that we know of who are celebrating Birthdays this week: On Monday 11th Pat Cooke, and on Thursday 14th Tomos Henson and Margaret Wicks. We hope you all have a great day!

An Invitation

Fr James Siemens from the Russian Orthodox Church in Cardiff will be leading a seminar on Christian Mission. It will be held in our church sanctuary on Saturday 16th March 10am -12pm. All welcome!

St David’s Guild

Another wonderful afternoon of music! Caryl Williams of Y Triban fame and a park rambler brought her guitar and entertained us with an eclectic mix of songs ranging from laments to unaccompanied folk songs. We particularly enjoyed singing the chorus of Calon Lan set to the tune The Rose.

Dilys, also a park rambler, told us how the economic and cultural growth of Pontypridd led to a bid to host the 1891 Eisteddfod. Pontypridd lost out to Swansea in acrimonious circumstances. However, in 1893, although they had to bid again against Neath, Llanelli and surprisingly Chicago, they won. They probably delivered the greatest National Eisteddfod of the nineteenth Eisteddfod with its 20,000 seater pavilion!

A quote from the South Wales Echo, 1st August 1893- “If ever the Eisteddfod delights be of the people and of the people, what place can welcome her more truly and with more propriety than Pontypridd”

Much of the research was taken from the book ” No-one remembers Pontypridd. The forgotten story of the 1893 National Eisteddfod of Wales” by Sheldon Phillips.     131 years later and Pontypridd are the hosts!

This week we will welcome Ben Heneghan, a musician and composer. He has composed many musical works and one piece of music that will be familiar to us….the music of Fireman Sam. The Cardiff Polyphonic Choir showcased Ben’s composition of Daffydd y Garreg Wen at their concert to celebrate St David’s Day.

Lent Studies

There is no Lent study meeting in person this week. Instead, we would encourage you to read the resources available on the theme Hopeful. We are asked the question: ‘What will our church do to grow hope?’

You can download your own copy from the website. https://www.christianaid.org.uk/get-involved/campaigns/act-poverty-resource-packs
