During Lent we looked at the events from Palm Sunday to Easter, taking one event each week, and culminating with a special evening when parents, relations and friends joined us as we brought all the symbols together. Each week we either made something or played a game to remind us of these events. We started with Christ’s entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, when people waved palm branches, the symbol was palm branches. The next week we heard the story of Jesus washing the disciples feet as they gathered together in the upper room for the last Supper – we decorated wine glasses and our symbol was a towel. The arrest in the garden of Gethsemane (a branch from a tree) when the disciples slept while Jesus prayed was the focus of our next meeting. Good Friday was a bad day, a sad day……we thought about the cross….we made crosses to eat.. Then Jesus rose on the third day (Easter Day) and met with the disciples on the beach and cooked fish. (a circle of fish).
The symbols when assembled formed a Celtic Cross.
With help from our visitors the children also made this ‘garden’
which was taken to church on Easter Day when the stone was rolled the stone away!
