9 Lessons and Carols 2020
It’s fair to say that a lot has changed this year and so within the whirlwind of missed or amended advent events and services, we thought we’d arrange a more traditional 9 lessons and carols service in which those online will be participating this afternoon.
A version of the 9 lessons and carols service was first celebrated in Truro Cathedral in 1880, but it was in 1918, when an amended format was used at King’s College, Cambridge, that the service became widely publicized and adopted. Back then, populist despots wrestled for power, Britain was renegotiating its relationship with Europe, and the world was in the midst of a global pandemic. Different times! It was within this horizon that the Dean of King’s College chose readings which he believed would reveal ‘the development of the loving purposes of God’.
For those of us not online, we might still want to look up and read through the passages in a Bible at home; play, read, or sing along to the suggested carols; and pray for all the groups represented. As you do, may this celebrated ‘development of the loving purposes of God’ bring us all nearer to the manger where love comes close in the vulnerable infant Jesus; where the hopes and fears of all the years are met by the God-with-us.
