13th December 2020
Today is Gaudate Sunday – Joy Sunday – which, at St. David’s Uniting Church, is normally celebrated through the giving of gifts. This year we’ll have to do things a little differently, of course but we have supported our usual Christmas charities of Homestart and the Mill Street Hostel, whilst also supporting Christian Aid, Women’s Aid RCT and the David Griffiths Church School. Details of how you can give online can be found here – https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/ourchristmasappeal. Please contact Lynda if you would like to Gift Aid and /or donate by cheque or cash.
Castle Square join St David’s Uniting Church’s gift day this year and share the recent correspondence from The Malarchi Trust – a charity helping orphans in the Pooncholai area of South India that they have supported for many years.
For many years, the Castle Square congregation financially supported the Malarchi Pooncholai Trust. This year, a generous legacy meant that ongoing financial support would no longer be required but we sent Christmas cards to those we supported out in India and we received a lengthy reply which included the attached photographs and these words:
We remain truly grateful for your generosity and loyalty over so many years and send you our very best wishes to you all and special thoughts to those of you who are living alone.
If you’re joining us for the 9 lessons and carols service at 3pm – via the phone or computer – you might want to have a mince pie, mug of mulled wine or other festive snack ready at the end as we share a few minutes of social time together. Christmas jumpers welcome!
Church Family and Pastoral News
We include this in the news sheet to inform our prayers. We ask you to pray for:
- Colleen’s mum is in hospital and has had a difficult few days, but is currently improving. We hold her, Colleen and the family in our prayers.
- Sheila’s Son and Daughter in law both have Covid. Her son is quite poorly. We pray for them and Sheila.
- Please remember John and Valerie as they cope with the trials of poor health and the restrictions of Covid.
- We continue to keep Bernice, Chris and Sue, all in Ysbyty Cwm Rhondda, in our prayers.
- We remember the family of Mrs Parfitt, a former Ladies Guild Member who died on Wednesday morning
- Sharon is improving but still struggles to talk. Bit phone calls are welcome as long as they are short!
- With the news that the rates of coronavirus in Wales are very high we think of all who are anxious and face making decisions on whether to see their families during Christmas.
- We pray for ALL frontline workers and those who are working and taking decisions on how to keep us safe.
- We think of people who have hospital appointments this week and pray that all will be well.
Birthdays this week …..
Only two birthdays that we know of this week! – Mike O’Callaghan Williams on Wednesday 16th and Susan Thomas on Saturday 19th. Birthday greetings from all your friends we hope you are able to enjoy your day!
Sharing Good News ~
We give thanks that students have now returned to their homes and are able to be with their families for Christmas.
What’s on this Week and next
There’s Something About Jesus/Isa. On Monday 13th we have a hugely exciting Double Vision evening with two speakers who bestride Abrahamic faiths as well as South Wales academic institutions! Dr Mansur Ali and Revd Ray Vincent will offer their thoughts on who was the figure of Jesus from a Muslim and Christian perspective. The zoom sign up is the same as for all advent events. Come and join the chat by 7:30pm if you can, otherwise it will be available on YouTube later. https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82229587377
Following Monday’s talk, on Wednesday 14th – 5-6:30pm, we are invited to a workshop entitled ‘Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia: More in common?’ This 90 minute Zoom discussion provide attendees with a brief introduction to two forms of religious discrimination important to understand in today’s society, and the journey of mutual learning that can be undertaken through interfaith projects. Next Sunday at 10.45am we will have our Nativity Service – with a fitting 2020 telling of the traditional story!
Speaking earlier of Christmas jumpers, you are encouraged to wear them for a prayer trail that will take you from St. David’s Uniting Church into the park. We originally planned this for next Sunday but as regulations have changed, we are encouraging you to set out on it – in groups of up to 4 (socially distanced, of course!) – any time from next Sunday onwards. Details will be sent out with next week’s material.
Two Advent Challenge deadlines this week!
Monday is the last day for contributions to be sent to Marcia for the ‘Bring and Share Christmas worship’ service on December 27th. If you have a favourite festive poem, reading, hymn, artwork or other that you would like to share in praise, please get it to Marcia by midnight Monday.
To date we haven’t received any Photo’s for the final ‘dressing-up’ challenge of the year! Can YOU dress up as a Character from the Nativity? Photo’s should be sent to Marcia by Wednesday 16th December for use in our Nativity Service on December 20th.
A Thought for the week.
Hope is some extraordinary spiritual grace that God gives us to control our fears, not to oust them.
