9th April 2023 – Easter Sunday
Alleluia! Christ is Risen. We welcome everyone who joins us for worship today, Easter Sunday, especially if you are a visitor or worshipping with us for the first time, as we celebrate Christ’s resurrection and triumph over death.
Our Service this morning is based on ‘Worship Notes from the URC’[1], prepared by Rev Paul Whittle and has been put together by the Worship group.
The service will include the celebration of the Lord’s Supper, which will be led by Michael Howells; we invite all, who so wish, to share in the bread and wine.
Please remember the Copper Pot, and put your loose change in it before you leave, it will be used to benefit local charities.

Church Family and Pastoral News
We include this in the news sheet to inform our prayers:
- We hold Graham Healy and the family in our prayers, as his mother, Mair, who was ever-present at everything in Porth URC, sadly passed away in the early hours of Wednesday morning. She had been unwell in hospital for some time. Graham is back from America where he has been on holiday. Details about funeral arrangements will be available in due course.
- We give thanks for ‘good’ news and we remember those for whom news has not been so good, particularly those who are grieving and missing loved ones.
- There are several people who are unable to worship with us because of illness or family responsibilities. A phone call or visit would let them know they are not forgotten!
- We continue to hold Viviane’s sister in our prayers.
- Pam Mahoney has had Covid again but was feeling ok. She is now ‘clear’.
- Elsie is delighted to share the news that she has had the ‘All Clear ‘from Velindre and will be monitored for the next 5 years.
- Colleen had been waiting for a scan on Saturday but this has been postponed because of staff shortages so it will a few more weeks before she will hopefully be able to drive again.
- Brian was admitted to Royal Glamorgan Hospital with a chest infection on Monday. This is now clear but his temperature is causing concern. CT scans haven’t shown anything unexpected. It isn’t known when he’ll be allowed home.
Birthdays
There is just one birthday this week, Dianne Davies who is celebrating an important big 0 on 10th April. Happy Birthday Diane – we hope you have a fantastic day!
Good news
From Phil…..
“Pasg Hapus! I can’t help but think of St David’s Uniting Church during holy week and so I wanted to send a quick note to wish you all a joy-filled and peaceful Easter. Huge thanks for all the cards, messages, and general well-wishing – both Clare and I really appreciate it and pray for you often. So have a wonderful weekend, may God bless us all, and much love from me, Phil”
Diary for the Week
Our service next Sunday, 16th April, will be via Zoom and will be led by Gwen Simmons who many of us will remember from her days as a student at the University of Glamorgan. We look forward to welcoming her online! Michael will lead a service in the Sanctuary for those who prefer for worship in person.
St David’s Guild
We had planned to meet monthly between April and September, but this may not be possible. Those who come to the meetings will know what a fantastic job Marilyn does in planning an interesting and varied programme, not an easy job. She deserves a break. It may be that we will be able to arrange an occasional meeting, if that is so we will contact everyone.
If anyone has any suggestions or requests, please let Marcia know.

Focusing on Holy Week and Easter
If you have been able to join any of the Holy Week Services you will have already seen the displays on the window sills. They depict the events from Palm Sunday to Easter Day and are accompanied by details of where the accounts can be found in the Gospels, along with the following ‘I wonder’ questions.
I wonder which of these pictures you like the best?
I wonder which of these pictures is most important?
I wonder if we can leave out any of the story and still have all the story we need?
I wonder if you would change anything in these pictures?
I wonder if you would like to swap any of these pictures for a different Holy Week scene?
Our thanks to Sue Walkling for these wonderful displays. Pictures are on our website.
