Today we mark the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. With joy, we get to do this with our friends Gethin Rhys and Fiona Liddell. Gethin’s ecumenical connections are many and varied but we invite him to preach today through his role with Cytûn – Churches Together in Wales – where he works as Policy Officer. Former minister of both Castle Square and Porth URCs, we look forward to hearing what Gethin has to share with us. We also welcome Fiona Liddell, who has worked in a variety of roles across denominations – from college warden at Trefeca to church treasurer at St David’s Uniting Church! Welcome home both!
Thinking about the unity of the global church, you might want to consider signing up to Christian Aid’s virtual conference, 22 – 26 February. There is a plethora of Bible studies, practical workshops, worship sessions and more. For more information, please go to https://www.christianaid.org.uk/get-involved/events/changemakers-conference
Church Family and Pastoral News
We include this in the news sheet to inform our prayers.
- Bernice is Home! We pray for her and those who care for her as she adjusts to life at home.
- We keep all who are being cared for in hospital or in their homes in our prayers.
- We think of Pam in her concern for her grandson Gruff who is still not well.
- During this bad weather many people are unable to get out – receiving a phone call is sometimes their only contact with people.
Sharing Good News
We rejoice that many people have now received their Covid Vaccine, or will do this week!
Bernice returned home on Monday….we give thanks that she is now able to be with her family.
Jayne is starting back to work on Thursday having been on sick leave with a knee injury since early October.
Pam’s 9yr old grandson Gruff, who recently appeared on S4C’s Mastermind Cymru, with the RNLI as his specialist subject, has been thanked by the lifesaving charity for completing a gruelling triathlon. Over 12 weeks he swam 5000m, cycled 100 miles and ran a marathon raising £515. Information from Lifeboat News 18 January 21

In a week in which we hear again Jesus’ call for us to ‘love one another’, it’s an opportune time to thank the elders, pastoral
buddies, and all the church family for the pastoral care that’s been shared over these difficult past 12 months. Phil
Thanks to all the wonderful support Michael and Lesley have given me – there for me so many times when I was down or ill. Much love to all’. Gail Stewart
News from the Elders Meeting
As St. David’s Uniting Church is aspiring to be an Eco Church and the URC Synod, is an Eco Synod, the elders have suggested amendments to our printing use which includes:
- Reduced amount of printing e.g. Monthly communion liturgies printed out for those who ask, not as standard.
- Colour to be used sparingly.
They also encourage anyone who still receives paper copies but who no longer need to (for example, if they now have internet access) to please let their courier know. It is hoped that these tweaks will make little change to the huge enjoyment we all get from the newsletter and additional material for those not online, whilst it will save paper and money for the church and for the members who print for others. As ever, we commit ourselves to making sure that all members have access to all our worship, encourage those not online to consider joining the live services via the telephone. Instructions on joining by phone are at the end of the newsletter.
On the day of the inauguration of Joe Biden, Phil reminisced on a pre-ordination holiday in America in 2014. He joined in 4th July celebrations with American friends! While there– he came across a pro-science protest in the early days of Trumps presidency someone was carrying a placard saying ‘Make America think again!’
He’s not sure when he’ll go back, as he’s reassessing the justification of long-haul holidays, much to his sadness. Not because its right, but America is a frightening place to be as we have seen on the TV recently
I think it’s fair to say the country hasn’t lived up to its expectations these past few years and is in a bad way. It has brought us and its people a lot of damage over the years. BUT
We are all inter-related – we are one human race and beside that Wales has a number of connections, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson & at least 5 signatories of the declaration of Independence claim Welsh descent!
Today (20 Jan) is a day to hope, these past few years a shadow has been across the whole world, certainly on our American siblings – they now have a new president, a new administration – Joe Biden a quiet and committed Christian – I think he’s going to need a lot of help – there’s a lot of good people in those he has nominated to be in his cabinet.
Our Challenge this week is – What have the Americans ever done for us? It might be something personal, you might like to share holidays you’ve spent there or links you have through families and friends; send in photo’s.
If you’ve been inspired by people from America – be they activists, theologians, people involved in silver screen, astronauts or even ‘apple’ products!! share them with us.
